Hi,

You should look at Shinken, it’s a enhanced Nagios reimplementation in Python that allow you to have a quick and easy distributed and high availability monitoring environment, and of course with Nagios configuration and plugins compatibility :)

It's available (Open Source with a AGPL licence) at http://www.shinken-monitoring.org with even a demo virtual machine to test it in 5minutes :)

Yeah, none of them are any good. I currently have a package coming my way via UPS. It had five status updates on May 5th between 6pm and midnight alone. Since then there has been nothing and today is the 8th.

So either the tracking info is totally uneven and unreliable or my package has been waylaid in Washington state for several days. I don't like either of these possibilities.

They must have delivered it to some one walking by my door. I never see that item again. an other time I will was waiting for a package. When I came home from work and I check online and it said delivered. I still did not got my package. So I knock on every body door and nothing. One guy came out of his house almost getting ready to fight me because I knock on his door asking about a package. Then I call, they said there is some thing wrong with the FEDEX computer. Great!!! They said it had gone back to the sender and an other time I came home to find my neighbor kids play with my package. What the F*CK!!!!! And my other package on the floor in the office were any body can take and it take two different FEDEX Driver to delivery two small package in one day. So I call them and they said if your don’t home they will give your package to your neighbor or office with out you knowing about it.

I've worked at a FedEx Ground facility in Orlando, Florida. Their tracking is excellent, at least in theory. Whenever it moves on a conveyor belt its scanned and automatically sorted. Trucks are loaded and unloaded by hand, and I'd have to say, I've watched them lay a carton labeled "Fragile" "Glass" flat and stand on it to load other things into the truck, not once, but pretty much religiously. All those spoofs you see as a comedy bit are pretty much accurate, short of beating the stuff with a baseball bat. Actually, its rated as the country's worst facility and if you're there for more than 2 weeks, you're already working on seniority. That said, I also looked into the UPS facility, and its not that much different. The facility was so dark and there's so many head injury and trip hazards that the workers should be wearing one of those mining helmets with the light on them. And while they do appear to be far more cautious than FedEx as far as package handling, I've seen them drop an few items off the back of their cart and keep going.

Couple distinctions between UPS and FedEx, FedEx drivers are all contractors, and UPS only hires them and most if not all other positions from the inside, and pretty much any new hires start off as package handlers. Also, you can only work at UPS once, so if you quit leave or w/e, don't expect to come back, or at least that's what they claim.

Got some USPS stuff coming in and trying to track them. It appears they only tell me when the stuff is picked up and when it leaves that areas postal hub. West coast to East coast, in the farmland, the so-called flyover country, in the corn rows, who knows where the stuff is. . .

And they wonder why I'm not around to accept delivery.

Guy, thanks for the feedback. To address the points you made...

Actually, there <em>is</em> a date on the post, apparently in the theme I'm currently using it's at the bottom:

<blockquote>This entry was written by emag and posted on March 6, 2008 at 10:09 pm and filed under ...</blockquote>

Though it's a bit lighter than the rest of the text, so it's pretty easy to miss.

Also, the link to phonescoop has an "Edit search" link, which in this case goes to their "weighted" search page (and with all the weights that I put in for that particular link). There's also a simpler "unweighted" search that just lets you enumerate features, but that wasn't nearly as helpful, since some features ARE more important to me than others, I just didn't feel like trying to come up with a definitive ranking when I was writing the blog post last night. :-)

As a brief followup, I've also been hitting <a href="http://www.amazon.com/" rel="nofollow">Amazon</a>, as well as the bigger GSM carriers' sites (<a href="http://www.t-mobile.com/" rel="nofollow">T-Mobile</a> and <a href="http://www.wireless.att.com/" rel="nofollow">AT&T/Cingular</a> here in the states), but by far in terms of searching based on specific features, phonescoop is by far the best, with Amazon coming in second of where I've looked.

Since my wife (that still sounds so strange!) deals with Blackberries at work, and has an <a href="http://www.phonescoop.com/phones/phone.php?p=832" rel="nofollow">older one</a> through them, I've played with it a bit, but wasn't too fond of the scroll wheel since it was basically 1-dimensional navigation. I'd expressed an interest to her in the <a href="http://www.phonescoop.com/phones/phone.php?p=1280" rel="nofollow">Blackberry 8820</a>, which she happened to actually work on today and suggested that we stop by an AT&T store so I could see if I liked it. It's actually a lot nicer than the BB8700 that she has through work, as it has a scroll ball instead of a wheel (yay, 2-D nav!).

I also looked at a few other phones, including the <a href="http://www.phonescoop.com/phones/phone.php?p=1319" rel="nofollow">BB Curve 8310</a>, the current <a href="http://www.phonescoop.com/phones/phone.php?p=1072" rel="nofollow">Palm Treo 680</a>, and some Windows-based phones. Interface-wise, I really liked the Treo, since I've been using PalmOS for 10 or so years, but it of course lacks Wi-Fi which I still consider *the* feature.

The Windows phones, especially the <a href="http://www.phonescoop.com/phones/phone.php?p=1186" rel="nofollow">Pantech Duo C810</a> was really neat, hardware-wise, with 2 separate sliders, one for the numeric pad and one for a keyboard, but I couldn't really get past the Windows interface. Yeah, I'm probably really biased in that regard, but it just felt...clunky.

The BB 8820 and BB C 8310 were fairly nice to navigate and play with, and also have added explicit "back" and "menu" buttons that made using them a bit less-confusing.

I even, though I'm reluctant to admit it, picked up an iPhone to try out. Apparently I'm really NOT the target audience for the thing, as my very first comment had to do with all the fingerprints, and my second was something along the lines of "how the hell do I get off of this screen?" (the last person to use it had left it on some app, and it was non-obvious to me how to get back to the main icon page). It was sleek and shiny (and greasy) and had only one button (though not pressed for us before it left the factory, cf: Dilbert), and thoroughly and completely likely to be destroyed within a week in my pocket or on my belt.

So so far the #1 contender is the BB 8820, for me. I've been thinking that, while a camera would be nice to have on the phone, I'm much more likely to make use of the Wi-Fi than the camera, especially since I specifically picked up a tiny 7MP camera as my "walking around" device (and use my dSLR for planned photo shooting events)...

Guy, thanks for the feedback. To address the points you made…

Actually, there is a date on the post, apparently in the theme I’m currently using it’s at the bottom:

This entry was written by emag and posted on March 6, 2008 at 10:09 pm and filed under …

Though it’s a bit lighter than the rest of the text, so it’s pretty easy to miss.

Also, the link to phonescoop has an “Edit search” link, which in this case goes to their “weighted” search page (and with all the weights that I put in for that particular link). There’s also a simpler “unweighted” search that just lets you enumerate features, but that wasn’t nearly as helpful, since some features ARE more important to me than others, I just didn’t feel like trying to come up with a definitive ranking when I was writing the blog post last night.

As a brief followup, I’ve also been hitting Amazon, as well as the bigger GSM carriers’ sites (T-Mobile and AT&T/Cingular here in the states), but by far in terms of searching based on specific features, phonescoop is by far the best, with Amazon coming in second of where I’ve looked.

Since my wife (that still sounds so strange!) deals with Blackberries at work, and has an older one through them, I’ve played with it a bit, but wasn’t too fond of the scroll wheel since it was basically 1-dimensional navigation. I’d expressed an interest to her in the Blackberry 8820, which she happened to actually work on today and suggested that we stop by an AT&T store so I could see if I liked it. It’s actually a lot nicer than the BB8700 that she has through work, as it has a scroll ball instead of a wheel (yay, 2-D nav!).

I also looked at a few other phones, including the BB Curve 8310, the current Palm Treo 680, and some Windows-based phones. Interface-wise, I really liked the Treo, since I’ve been using PalmOS for 10 or so years, but it of course lacks Wi-Fi which I still consider *the* feature.

The Windows phones, especially the Pantech Duo C810 was really neat, hardware-wise, with 2 separate sliders, one for the numeric pad and one for a keyboard, but I couldn’t really get past the Windows interface. Yeah, I’m probably really biased in that regard, but it just felt…clunky.

The BB 8820 and BB C 8310 were fairly nice to navigate and play with, and also have added explicit “back” and “menu” buttons that made using them a bit less-confusing.

I even, though I’m reluctant to admit it, picked up an iPhone to try out. Apparently I’m really NOT the target audience for the thing, as my very first comment had to do with all the fingerprints, and my second was something along the lines of “how the hell do I get off of this screen?” (the last person to use it had left it on some app, and it was non-obvious to me how to get back to the main icon page).
Very interesting to a novice like me. I became aware of new features that are available, albeit I didn't understand some of them. What would have been interesting would have been to have seen a priorty rating on each feature..
eg.."essential", very important, important, nice to have
categories.
I suspect that categorising them like that would also help the author, as it would help him decide on the best of the bunch of phones offering. I suspect that no phone would have all the features he would like, and so categorising each part of his wish list would help him find the phone that is the best compromise. For example, the "essential feature" category would eliminate a lot of phones that had many features, but not THE one that is essential.

Heh .. I was a happy newsbeuter denizen until one day it just stopped working. Upon checking, cache.db had over
1Gb in it so I deleted it and have not been able to restart. apt-get removing and re-installing newsbeuter does not help. Any constructive ideas would be appreciated.

Adam.

Then file a bug against libmrss, upon which newsbeuter builds. I use newsbeuter by myself, and read about 20 Atom feeds with it without any problems. So probably filing a bug would end your search more quickly than keeping on searching.

@ak:
Yeah, I just went and downloaded newsbeuter and also downloaded and compiled all of the dependancies and I can assure you that it *doesn't* handle atom feeds.

For instance, the main reason newsbeuter was a draw for me was Mark Pilgrim's blog (champion of the well-formed) and newsbeuter chokes on his atom feed.

So, no, newsbeuter *does not* handle atom feeds.

And the search continues...

Have you considered trying out <a href="http://synflood.at/newsbeuter.html" rel="nofollow">newsbeuter</a>? It supports basically all you need:
- supports RSS 0.90, 0.91, 0.92, 1.0, 2.0 and Atom 0.3 and 1.0
- can regularly update all feeds on its own in the background
- can keep unread articles forever
- supports a flexible categorization system based on tags (every RSS feed can have 0 or more tags, and you can filter RSS feeds by tag)
- stores all the downloaded feeds in a local SQLite database that can e.g. be used for custom SQL queries.
I hope I aroused your interest in this program.

Warren:

After seeing the shenanigans that go on with feeds in general, I can fully understand why you'd have abandoned your own. What I don't understand is why you seem to be such a masochist as to have done it repeatedly. :-)

The more I look at all the minor variations and the organic growths that have attached themselves to RSS, the mare I think "that can wait until someone wants it". There are a LOT of interesting ideas that people have implemented to try to ease their own burdens, but so much seems to be poorly documented, invalidly specified, or both. I think I've currently got a happy medium (or at least a lowest common denominator) to pull and store basic info, but anything fancy will definitely need to wait for later.

Looking at my own MP3 and OGG collection, I have to admit that I'm guilty of poor tagging myself. AND I'm really bad about personal backups. Man, you've pegged me, along with most of the rest of the world.
